Leading does not just mean ordering

Leading does not just mean ordering

How can we define a leader? Does this correspond to someone who runs an organization or rather a leader of a work team? Are there attributes that indicate that a person is a leader?

From a professional and organizational point of view, certain personal, behavioral and positional characteristics related to the position or position held in the company have been specified to identify a leader. Are leaders born leaders or do they become leaders?

If we evoke leadership as the set of personal attributes, we could understand that a leader is born leader. It would be people who know how to guide and lead a group, organize, solve problems that arise and others identify as the leader.

If we talk about a leader for the position he occupies, we should say that a leader becomes leader. That would mean that it changes over time and experiences, over the positions that he occupies, depending on the relationship he has with the employees and the way he has to impose direction and coordination. In this case, personal characteristics would not be decisive and professional characteristics alone would be important.

On the other hand, when we refer to a good leader for his behavior, we could focus on the aspects that draw his attention from a behavioral point of view. Does this person act by productivity for the company or for the development of social relations at work? Depending on the orientation of the behavior, we could identify a leader according to the needs he has to meet.

Characteristics of a good leader

Beyond what we have commented, a good leader is a charismatic person who inspires and is followed by others. For this reason, a leader does not have to be a leader. Although some personal characteristics may favor the leadership position, directing is a two-way process that refers to the influencing agent and the influenced agent (Katz and Kahn).

In order to lead, a person must have the right characteristics to treat individuals such as empathy, good communication, motivation, or professional-friendly characteristics. For example, knowing how to work in groups, having the creativity to solve problems, clarify objectives and work in different directions to achieve them.

A person can be born with facilities to guide others, but if she wishes to lead appropriately, she will have to perfect these facilities and develop others that will allow him to complete his leadership role. Of course, one must not forget the fact that directing requires the creation and maintenance of a good general atmosphere in which everyone is free to choose who is his leader. So we must not ignore leadership, we must take care and win every day.

Leading requires much more than just exercising power

As we see, being a good leader requires much more than the ability to lead and guide. Leading is influencing others, manage to convince them to do what is proposed and to go to the end. It is also to allow them to enjoy the work and to engage in their missions efficiently and effectively.

A leader is one who knows how to integrate all the attributes and who makes each member of his team grow. A leader knows his team well, he knows everyone's strengths and knows what to improve. He identifies the times when he needs to be harder or when he can delegate his work to focus on employee relationships.

So, to lead is not just about ordering. It is planting the seed in a work team to give it movement. To lead is to motivate and to propose new points of view, it is to take risks and to believe in those who believe in you. To lead is to become the singing voice knowing that those who make you great are those who support you from the bottom.
