Empathic Leadership: What is it?

Leadership is the ability to manage a group of people or an organization.Thanks to him, we establish a clear vision of the objectives to be fulfilled, we manage to motivate the members of the team so that they want to work for a common goal and we solve the internal conflicts between the different people of the group.

Nevertheless, even if all leaders share these characteristics, there are different types of leadership. Some involveto act by putting personal profit before that of the group, to use tactics of manipulation or to be arrogant and narcissistic.

Contrary to this, a person who practices empathic leadershipwill be able to put himself in the shoes of the members of his team.On top of that, she will try to understand the needs of the market and its consumers. She will learn to give customers what they need.

In addition, an empathic leader will be able to communicate effectively with the people on the team. He can tell them what to do. Like this,it will make them want to work by defining goals to achieve.

How to develop empathic leadership?

According to research conducted on this way of leading a team, a person who wishes to adopt an empathic leadership stylewill develop, mainly, five skills:empathy, enthusiasm, human warmth, serenity and the ability to set boundaries. Let's look at each of these points.

1. Empathy

Of course, a person who wants to become an empathic leader must be able to put himself in the shoes of others. But empathy is not just about understanding what the other thinks from a rational point of view. Someone who wants to develop empathic leadership skillsmust understand how an action will affect each member of his team.

For many people, this ability to put oneself in another's shoes will not be born miraculously. However, the latest research showsthat it is perfectly possible to develop empathy.

2. The enthusiasm

A good empathetic leader is able to convey his desires to create and produce to the rest of the team. His leadership has nothing to do with getting people to do their jobs. On the contrary,he is able to transmit their enthusiasm and motivate them to work.

To achieve this, a person who possesses empathic leadership gifts is able to put energy and passion into what he proposes and does.She serves as an example to her colleagues.

3. Human warmth

Since he is able to put himself in the shoes of others,it can also bring solutions by being close to people and being sensitiveto individual circumstances.

This does not mean that the leader goes to work to make friends. He knows thata cordial relationship – it is the minimum – favors a good professional relationship. So it's very positive for the team.In the end, this proximity also gives it a privileged place. It can reinforce the individual attitudes that interest him most in the group.

4. Serenity

The empathic leader must be able to keep calm in complicated or stressful situations. To lead his team,he must act as an example.Therefore, if he lets his impulses control him, he will quickly lose the respect of his employees.

5. The ability to set limits

The last skill a person should dominate is that which consists ofestablish personal and professional boundaries.Even if he is able to understand the members of his team, a good empathic leader must know how to impose himself and maintain a distance when the situation requires it.
